Mathias Nampoka's life is as simple and beautiful as his sculptures. He lives in an old neighbourhood of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. With no electricity, his days start at sunrise and end at sunset. Nampoka spends most of his waking hours at the atelier just outside of his house, working on his sculptures.
Born in 1971, he is the only son of Evarist Nampoka, one of the founding sculptors of the Shetani school, known for its bold carving style.
Hendrick Lilanga was born in 1974 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Makonde by tribe, a grandson of the pioneer of Lilanga art style, George Lilanga. Hendrick attended Primary School 3 times in 1984 – 1985 – 1986 then in 1987 and completed his schooling in Tanga, Pangani in 1993. He then moved to Dar es salaam to join his grand father George Lilanga who taught him how to become an artist of Spirit’s figures and helped him join Kizuiani Secondary School in 1993 till 1994. Between 1993 and 1998, he worked as a freelance artist in fine art. In 2007 and 2008 he went to Salzburg to attend a Graphic etching course which was hosted by the Summer Academy of Fine Arts.

He became a pupil of Mr. Noel Kambili, one of the leading Tinga Tinga artists, and learned how to paint for a year in a village called Bunju.
